Atlanta has a rich heritage when it comes to basketball. Although it’s home to top college basketball programs like Georgia Tech and the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, there is another reason Atlanta loves it when the leather meets the hardwood, amateur dunking star and athlete Damian Johnson. The 18 year-old basketball fanatic has been in love with the game since he was a little boy. “I’ve been playing for as long as I can remember, probably elementary school. It’s fun, I wouldn’t be complete without basketball.”

Johnson has been dunking for two years and has countless videos showcasing his talent on his Instagram account, damiandunks. “I’ve gotten hundreds of comments and messages from people asking me how I got to where I am. I don’t really have goals in terms of dunking. I just like to inspire others to achieve their goals by showing what I do well.”

The forward masters his craft by staying consistent. Johnson said he always practices, putting in hours of work each week. In addition to spending time in the gym, his work-life balance also consists of school and a part-time job at a pizza restaurant. “I’m busy, but I make time for what I want and that includes basketball.”

Johnson’s recipe for touching the rim is simple. He just jumps a lot and eats a healthy diet, working to treat his body right to get the results he expects.

Since he lives in metro Atlanta, it’s only fitting that he roots for the Hawks, but he also admires Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook. “The energy and hustle that he brings to the game, the power he puts into his dunks, he loves what he does and he shows it. What more could you ask for.”

Damian is set to graduate high school this month and will attend Kennesaw State University in the fall.
